The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Roscoe on Saturday night.
Hundreds of homes and businesses throughout Sullivan County were left in the dark.
A National Weather Service crew assessed damage in the county on Sunday to make the determination.
A roof was blown off a Roscoe auto body shop and onto a Jeep in the parking lot.
Emergency cleanup crews and homeowners on Sunday were left to pick up the big pieces of debris from broken trees and roofs that scattered in parts of the county.
Sullivan County Government communications director Dan Hust said Sunday night electrical power was in the process of being restored to residents who were left in the dark.
Hust added that it is very rare for tornadoes to make landfall in Sullivan County, but it has happened before, given that it is a mountainous region.
Despite the damages, Hust said he was in downtown Roscoe and saw that the lights were on, and businesses were open.
Officials said damage assessments were underway to determine if any state or federal funds will be requested to help with the cleanup and rebuilding that is expected to take a long time.
