Members of the New York State Nurses Association(NYSNA) have postponed their strike date.
Nurses at Montefiore, Mount Sinai and New York Presbyterian hospitals were set to walk off the job on April 2.
They say the hospitals refuse to hire enough caregivers, which they claim forces them to care for up to 19 patients at once.
The union says new contract talks will continue on Wednesday.
NYSNA is the state’s largest union for registered nurses and has more than 42,000 members.
