The National Transportation Safety Board released documents from an investigation into a fatal school bus crash in Orange County last September.
Records included an interview with the bus driver, Lisa Schaffer. She said she tried to pull back once the tires were blowing out, but that she was already close to the edge of the road and there was not much she could do.
The bus carrying 40 band members and four adults from Farmingdale High School crashed through a cable barrier along I-84 in Sept. 2023. The bus came to a rest at the bottom of an embankment.
The school’s band director Gina Pellettiere and chaperone Beatrice Ferrari were killed in the crash. Dozens of students were injured.
A final report on the crash has not been released, and the NTSB says it is still working to find a probable cause for the crash.
