A Hudson Valley farm is putting old Christmas trees to good use at the end of this holiday season.
Some of the animals of the Summit School Farm in Nyack will happily accept your old Christmas trees as a treat. Staff say it’s beneficial to their health too.
“It helps them not get parasites. They're filled with vitamin C,” says Anna Sicari, of the farm.
The staff says goats and pigs love to eat the trees.
“Plus, during this time of year, this is all that's out there…The trees are bare, and this is a great way for them to substitute a lot of the nutrients that they normally get from those other trees,” says Damon Fischetti, of Summit School.
The chickens also found some utility for the trees.
“The chickens actually use it for shelter from rain, shelter from the sun, just to play in it. But I've seen them eating it too,” Sicari says.
It started three years ago with a Facebook post, and exploded from there. Now it's tradition for the neighbors in Nyack to come drop their trees off after the holiday.
The staff says next time you have a pine tree to dispose of, don't forget your friendly neighborhood goats.
“Here at the Summit School Farm, your Christmas trash is someone else's Christmas treat," Sicarisays.
