As Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, Northwell Health's Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow is collecting new and gently used surgical and non-surgical bras for women impacted by breast cancer and those who live in underserved communities.
The hospital's second annual "Phelps Goes Pink" bra drive aims to collect 500 bras this year, up from roughly 300 donated in 2025.
Among those donating is breast cancer survivor and advocate Justine Morris, who was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer at age 29 after discovering a lump during a self-exam.
"I knew something was wrong because I did a self-awareness exam," Morris said.
She says she underwent a double mastectomy, reconstructive surgery and radiation treatment.
Today, she shares her journey on social media and works to support other women facing similar diagnoses.
Donated bras will be given to the IFCA Housing Network Thrift Shop in Ossining, which supports affordable housing initiatives and unhoused individuals.
"Many women who undergo surgery, post-op, are dealing with differences in their bodies," said Kristina Gazivoda, director of patient care services at Northwell Health's Phelps Hospital.
"Being able to have a choice of bras and things that they can choose from post-surgery is extremely important for their quality of life and self-image."
The bra drive runs through Oct. 31.
Donations will also be accepted at the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 18 at Manhattanville University.
