Two trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line in Montclair made contact with one another just west of the Bay Street station in Montclair on Friday evening, according to a New Jersey Transit spokesperson.
The crash led to a minor derailment.
There are reports of 17 injuries that are currently considered non-life-threatening.
New Jersey Transit police are currently investigating the situation. It is not yet clear what caused the crash.
New Jersey Transit CEO Kris Kolluri and senior NJ Transit staff were on the scene.
Officials said they were also waiting for officials with the National Transportation Safety Board to arrive to help with the investigation.
Montclair service was suspended following the crash, but resumed on Saturday morning.
"Our primary focus during this incident is the safety of our passengers, our employees and our first responders," New Jersey Transit officials wrote in an X post.
