A young man from New Jersey has died after drowning at a popular lake inside Harriman State Park.
Police say 20-year-old Yoshitaka Inomata, of Little Falls, N.J., was swimming shortly after 6 p.m. in an area where swimming is prohibited and where there was no lifeguard. He was with two other friends, both also 20 years old and from Little Falls.
Emergency crews were called to Pine Meadow Lake in Tuxedo, where witnesses say Inomata was trying to swim the distance of the lake when he went under and never surfaced.
Park police, park rangers and several fire departments from Rockland and Orange counties searched the water for the man and eventually pulled him out but it was too late.
An official cause of death still has to be determined by the Rockland County medical examiner.
