With the school year underway next week, News 12 caught up with parents taking part in the annual ritual of back- to-school shopping.
From supplies in Nanuet to new looks at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, people in Rockland were checking off that back-to-school shopping list.
"It's going good. Trying to get new shoes, new clothes,” said Adrian a high schooler from Irvington. “Trying to get new drip for school."
"We got most of the stuff, but there's some stuff I'm going to need to order online as well," said one mom.
The National Retail Federation estimates total back to school spending for K-12 will be down this year at about $39 billion, compared to $41 billion last year.
Each household is shelling out a little less, too, approximately $875 compared to $890 in 2023, which was a record-setting year in both categories.
The NRF points to inflation as one reason why consumers are spending the way they are this year.
The NRF also says a majority of shoppers begin three weeks to a month before school starts.
