A disabled man who was gunned down near a historic state site in Newburgh remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to city officials.

Police rushed to Liberty Street Monday night, just before 11 p.m., after officials say a Shotspotter activation alerted them to the shooting. They say a man was found shot in the chest on the street, across from Washington’s headquarters.

Witnesses say the victim was seen walking with a cane moments before he was gunned down.

News 12 video of police at the scene shows some of the man’s belongings on the street, including a cane, marked into evidence along with bullet casings near a white Toyota.

One neighbor says the shooting was so close to his bedroom window that he woke up worried that he was shot.

“I heard boom, boom, boom. I checked {gesturing to his body} and went back to sleep,” says Lamont Ashton.

On Tuesday, both plain clothed and uniformed police were seen canvassing the area for clues and were heard asking residents if they have surveillance video.

Neighbors say the violence needs to stop.

“People are crazy,” William Winn says. “They start to get better and then it gets worse. You have to be concerned wherever you go now.”

Police haven’t said if an arrest was made or how old the victim is. They also haven’t revealed if the victim was targeted or shot by mistake.

“It’s bad. That’s all I can say,” says Winn.
