A Newburgh man lost his life during lifeguard tryouts in Cape Cod on Saturday.
Authorities say 22-year-old Jack Jakubek was taking part in a lifeguard training exercise when he drowned.
Officials say that Jakubek went under the water, and when he didn't surface, lifeguards began looking for him. He was found 30 minutes later and rushed to the hospital where he was prounounced dead.
"This is a regularly scheduled lifeguard test. It's performed every year when the returning guards show up at 8 a.m. and compete for the jobs at Nauset Beach for the summer," said Chief Anthony Pike, of the Orleans Fire Department.
Jakubek was apparently a member of his college swim team, and had completed all of the lifeguard training last year. An investigation is ongoing to determine his cause of death.
