The New York Times has published another report detailing the unfinished work of the now-defunct Moreland Commission, and the name of one Hudson Valley senator is front and center.
Republican Greg Ball reportedly spent his campaign cash on trips to Cancun and Acapulco, a shopping spree at Brooks Brothers, bar bills in Texas and an entry fee for an extreme obstacle course called Tough Mudder.
Ball's staffers insist the campaign paid for those items as a partial reimbursement for money Ball personally dished out on campaign expenses.
Iona College political professor Jeannie Zaino says what's most shocking about the spending is that under existing campaign laws it's probably all perfectly legitimate.
"It's immoral," she says. "It seems unethical, and yet it is legal. And that was what the Moreland Commission was set to uncover, what was wrong with our campaign finance system."
Gov. Andrew Como shut down the ethics panel earlier this year.
