New York City Public Schools special education teacher Nicole Diggs charged with neglect in disabled daughter's 2012 death
A Yonkers mother has been charged in the 2012 death of her disabled daughter.
Nicole Diggs was charged Wednesday with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of her own child. Her daughter, 8-year-old Alayah Saverese, suffered from cerebral palsy. She could not walk, talk or eat by herself.
Savarese was born with cerebral palsy and a serious seizure disorder, but according to the Westchester County district attorney, she suffered the most under the care of own mother. Prosecutors say Diggs failed to provide Savarese with adequate food and medical care. She also failed to bring her to class at the Cerebral Palsy School of Westchester, where she received therapy.
Savarese was found dead in her mother's sixth-floor Ashburton Avenue apartment with a ruptured stomach in 2012. Prosecutors say reports reveal a long history of neglect.
Diggs is a New York City Public Schools special education teacher, whose duties include caring for other special needs children. News 12 visited Diggs' current home in the Bronx, but nobody answered the door.
Police are looking for a second individual involved in the child's death, but have not released details about his or her identity.
If convicted, Diggs faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison.
