A New Rochelle pet shelter is changing its name and expanding its services.
The New Rochelle Humane Society has changed its name to the "Humane Society of Westchester" and is welcoming in more pets.
The facility rescues more than 500 dogs and 900 cats each year, but it wants to do more. "We take in any stray, abandoned, lost, neglected dog, and cats also," says Shelter Manager Dana Rocco.
The shelter is expanding its services after the recent closing of "Pets Alive" in Elmsford. "We provide animal services for 19 different towns and villages going far beyond New Rochelle's borders," says Rocco.
Sara Etkin is just one of many people who found a family member at the shelter. She says her dog "Sweetums," a 5-year-old Lab mix, was found wandering the streets of New Rochelle. The dog was dirty, emaciated, and had a very serious hip injury when she was rescued by the shelter. "They saved her life," says Etkin.
Not only has Sweetums been adopted by a loving family, but she is also now a therapy dog and a mom with eleven puppies.
