Girl Scouts from New Rochelle kicked off National Girl Scout week with a derby race.
National Girl Scout Week commemorates the 111th anniversary of the organization.
The New Rochelle group celebrated by giving each of the derby’s 33 cars unique looks and styles.
"The girls built their own cars at home, and they are here today to race them,” said a group leader.
Chapter leaders say the derby race competition allows the girls to practice some of the STEM principles they learn in the Girl Scouts.
"I’ve learned where to put the certain weights in the car, so it goes faster,” said one Girl Scout.
Leaders of the New Rochelle group hope the event inspires more girls to become interested in STEM fields.
