The new renovations at Stefanik Park in Yonkers are now open to the public.
The City of Yonkers said this project is part of their efforts to renovate multiple parks in the city.
For people who often go to Stefanik Park, the new renovations were needed.
“We need more places like this,” says Elijah Flamer, a Yonkers resident.
Stefanik Park is now home to a new basketball court, a new retaining wall, landscaping, fencing and efforts to make it more accessible.
“Parks like this that were built a long time ago needed to be repaired and upgraded,” says Mayor Mike Spano.
City officials said nearly $700,000 was spent on the project.
People who live near the park are hopeful these new renovations will draw in more people.
“There are so many changes in the city and you can see it. A lot of parks are renovated, and people enjoy it,” says Marcia Brito, a Yonkers resident.
Some brought up safety concerns and said they hope it’ll give kids a new place to go.
“It’s really dangerous out here, you got to give them something to do. The kids don’t have anything to do out here,” says Flamer.
Spano says he thinks kids will take advantage of the new facilities and give them a clean and fun place to be.
“Kids will be using the basketball court, they’ll be playing soccer and a lot of people already use the workout equipment,” says Spano.
