A once inaccessible area of Peekskill's waterfront opened as a brand-new park Friday.
Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina officially opened Southern Waterfront Park, an event that has been anticipated in the community for many years.
The 3-acre park offers benches, gazebos and a 1-mile paved trail along the Hudson River.
One of the park's other features was a last-second addition: an overlook that offers a wide view of the Hudson River that stretches as far as the Bear Mountain Bridge.
City Planner Jean Friedman says she has been working on making this project a reality since 2007.
