The new mayor of Mount Vernon is now calling on the people in the city to help him make changes.
City Councilman Richard Thomas got 74 percent of the vote, defeating City Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds and state Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson.
Thomas says in addition to public safety and repairing the city's broken infrastructure, fixing Memorial Park could be key to his success as mayor.
The mayor-elect says he knows if he can change how people feel about the stadium, he may also be able to change how people feel about Mount Vernon.
Thomas says millions of dollars have been spent on Memorial Park, but he insists no one knows where the money has been spent.
"This is going to take a lot of community engagement," he says. "The community coming together to fix our field."
