New federal subpoena targets Mt. Vernon mayor
Another federal subpoena was issued Thursday and this one targets Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis. The latest subpoena demands information that could prove conspiracy to defraud the federal government. It seeks financial documents relating to Davis' corporation and properties on Sandford Boulevard, South Fifth Avenue and Futon Street. The subpoena also requests Davis' records of payments to contractors, loans and checks.News of the subpoena comes on the same day Davis' attorney was granted sweeping powers to investigate allegations of financial misconduct in the city. The mayor was preparing drafts of subpoenas Thursday to be handed to members of the Mount Vernon City Council, city clerk, comptroller and corporation counsel. "It would seem this is a distraction on the part of the mayor of what he appears to be responsible for," said Mount Vernon City Council President Steve Horton.Meantime, there are two separate investigations focusing on city hall. In one case, boxes of records delving into carting contracts with alleged mob ties were taken by FBI agents. The other probe involves the troubled Urban Renewal Agency.
