One of the first projects for the proposed $3 billion development deal for Yonkers will be a new minor league baseball stadium.
The stadium was first proposed in 2002, however, opposition from business owners stalled the project. Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone inked a deal with three new developers to revitalize the downtown district Thursday and opposition to the new 6,500-seat ballpark is drying up. One of the developers is Louis Capelli, a Yonkers native, who hopes the building owners and merchants will cooperate by selling their property to him for the project.
The developers have to come back to the city council with a revised environmental statement for the ballpark. City officials hope to break ground in about six months.
