Is your child having a tough time coping during quarantine? Paula Madrid, a Columbia University psychologist who specializes in trauma has tips that have helped her balance working from home with homeschooling her 7-year-old daughter during the COVID-19 pandemic.
1. Encourage children to talk openly about their emotions.
2. Stay connected. Arrange virtual playdates, visit close contact from a distance, and have long phone conversations with family and friends.
3. Work their strengths. Some children are open to learning something new during quarantine. Others need to focus on their strengths to cope. Madrid explains "Reading, using playdough, coloring, building Legos, and playing with toys can provide children with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction."
4. Create new routines that make sense during this time to maintain order at home, like family movie or ice cream nights.
5. Reframe quarantine with a positive mindset.
