Teachers
in Nanuet took to the streets
today to protest their
contract situation.
Teachers
gathered outside of MacArthur Barr Middle School claiming the school district
is not willing to negotiate with the union over new contracts for the upcoming
school year.
They are looking for better pay and benefits. "Our
contract is up on June 30, and we needed to declare impasse on negotiations
because our parties haven't been able to come to an agreement. We’re the second
lowest paid teaching unit in the county. We’re tied with another school for the longest school year. We have
the longest school days in days and minutes, so we give the most time, for very
little pay,” says Stacey
Lang, president of Nanuet Teaching Association.
They say they starting
salary for a teacher in their district is in the low $50,000 range.
Meantime for tenured teachers, their salary is in the $80,000 range.
