Multiple people were stabbed Sunday evening in the East Village, resulting in one man's death and two others being injured.
Around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, police received 911 calls about a stabbing near Avenue A and East 14th Street. When officers arrived, they found three people with stab wounds.
A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the neck and died. A 51-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg and is in critical condition. A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the back and is in stable condition.
All three victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Police quickly arrested a 30-year-old man named Alejandro Piedra at the scene and found a knife. He is charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Some residents say the area is known for street drug use and crime.
Robert Golden, a resident of 48 years, said, "I was struck by it. I remember when this city was a joyous, wonderful, vibrant place to live and work. Things have changed. I credit it to drug abuse and lack of respect for one another."
The police have not yet released the name of the man who died, as they are still notifying his family.
