Body‑cam footage captured police and firefighters rescuing a family trapped inside a burning home Monday evening on Lester Avenue in Mamaroneck.

Flames had already engulfed the back of the two‑story house just after 5 p.m., and fire officials said the family was in "deep trouble." They said thick black smoke could be seen from Manhattan.

Neighbor Bill Sjostedt tried using a garden hose to help. "It was engulfed, the whole back deck… it was going up the outside walls, and then I could see the flames inside both kitchen windows on the first floor and the second floor," he said.

The fire reached a second alarm, bringing about 60 firefighters from several departments.

Next‑door neighbor Silvestre Arenas said he feared for those trapped. "Oh my gosh, I was scared for the family. I saw the mom and one of the children hanging out of the window. It was scary, especially when you saw the flames shooting up," he said.

As firefighters attacked the flames, four Mamaroneck Village police officers used a ladder seen on body‑cam video to reach a second‑story window where four people, including an infant, were trapped. All were rescued as smoke and flames pushed through the home. Two others escaped from the first floor.

Five people were taken to area hospitals for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.

Crews brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

Fire officials said the cause is under investigation. The Red Cross has been notified to assist the victims.
