Several people were taken into custody early Sunday morning during a protest against ICE, according to the New York City Police Department.
Police say ICE protesters gathered outside the Wyckoff Medical Center, where ICE was conducting operations.
A DHS spokesperson stated that the ICE enforcement operation was targeted and "resulted in the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a criminal illegal alien from Nigeria with previous arrests for assault and criminal drug possession."
The statement continues, saying that Okeke entered the United States in August of 2023 on a tourist visa, and he was required to leave by February of 2024.
Okeke refused to comply with officers' commands to exit the vehicle and weaponized his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers, according to the DHS Spokesperson.
The statement says that after his arrest, he requested medical assistance and was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation. During the evaluation, a significant crowd of protesters gathered at the hospital.
Authorities say that the protestors damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted ICE officers, resulting in minor injuries.
The NYPD said it was not involved in the ICE operation and responded only after reports of a disturbance at the site.
The protest was broken up around 5 a.m.
Police confirm that 8 people were arrested and one person was given a criminal court summons.
The charges include resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and obstructing government administration.
Officials have released statements regarding ICE's presence and are urging the public to use the Hands Off NYC hotline.
