Multiple firefighters suffered injuries while battling a two-alarm fire Saturday night at a home in White Plains.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the call when flames sparked at the multi-family home at 3 Lafayette St.

White Plains Fire Department Chief Kevin Clampet said the fire appears to have started in the basement just before 7 p.m. and worked its way up toward the roof.

The Scarsdale and Hartsdale fire departments assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

Clampet said nine people were at the home at the time and all got out safely. However, he added that the blaze took a heavy toll on firefighters who responded.

"There's back injuries, it's very icy out here, you also have slip and falls. There's smoke inhalation, but it's very labor-intensive activity fighting a fire. So guys go from zero to 100 and they are human," Clampet said.

The home appeared to be unlivable as of Saturday night.

A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
