More than 2,000 Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road trains will be outfitted with cameras over the next three years.

MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast says the inward-facing and outward-facing cameras will provide another measure of safety and security on the train. Prendergast says they can also aid in accident investigations.

The move comes after a Metro-North derailment in the Bronx killed four passengers and injured 63 others. It was determined afterward the engineer had fallen asleep, due to undiagnosed sleep apnea.

The MTA also wants to increase fares by around 4 percent over the next two years. The proposed hikes would take effect next March.
