The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's latest price hikes went into effect Sunday.

MTA fares have increased by 4 percent across all systems. This amounts to 50 cents for Metro-North riders who make a round-trip to or from Grand Central Station to White Plains during peak hours. Monthly ticket holders on the same route are seeing a $10 increase.

One commuter told News 12 that they think the hike is unnecessary, saying that something else must be done to avoid further fare increases.

The MTA says the money raised will go for capital improvements like replacing aging cars and tracks or modernizing the signal system. 

Similar hikes are going into effect across the entire MTA system, from Bee-Line Bus System fares to bridge and tunnel tolls.

The MTA says that another 4 percent increase will occur in 2017.
