The MTA is attempting to address an issue that would improve service for train commuters in Rockland and Orange counties.

For years, riders on the Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines have been looking for whatever help they can to get them to work on time. The lines west of the Hudson train line, run by New Jersey Transit on behalf of Metro-North, have been plagued by delays and cancellations, often due to a shortage of engineers.

The MTA says it has reached a deal with its union to send six of its engineers to work the Port Jervis and Pascack lines with the hope it will improve service.

Before the deal goes through, it must first be signed off by New Jersey Transit and its union. But officials there told News 12 that they don't have an agreement with Metro-North.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day is encouraging New Jersey Transit to do the right thing for the people of Rockland and Orange counties.

“We have a $42 million budget deficit in Rockland. The least they can do is provide train service that gets people to work,” he says.
