A Mt. Vernon African art gallery is celebrating the freedom of Juneteenth with various handmade crafts that represent African American culture and people.

Rose Languisa has offered African arts and crafts from her Mt. Vernon gallery for 26 years.

An American citizen now, she's originally from Tanzania, and though her family wasn't enslaved she celebrates Juneteenth every year.

"Those are my brothers and sisters and since they came from Africa, I can relate to them 100%," Languisa says.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 that the last slaves in the U.S in Texas were finally told they were free two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

"It must have been a joy to them and right now, it's joy to the whole world," she says.

Luangisa says she can see the joy on people's faces when she shows them work from their people, which she says helps everyone celebrate freedom.
