Students in Mount Vernon got to show off their STEM skills at the "Solar Go-Kart Academy," a six-week program that concluded Wednesday at Brush Park in Mount Vernon.

This was the first time the program was held in the City of Mount Vernon.

A dozen middle school students got to learn about STEM, different careers and technical skills, all while having fun.

Turning gas-powered go-karts into solar-powered go-karts was the final lesson for the students, who all say they had a great time working together.

On Wednesday, students had the opportunity to take a ride in one of the two go-karts, showing their families and friends all their hard work.

The program was hosted by Mount Vernon Youth Program in partnership with Florida-based The Flying Classroom/BITTS.

"It heightened their teamwork skills, it heightened their critical thinking...When I say we have future engineers, there is definitely future engineers in this group," said Debbie Burrell-Butler, with the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau.

Each student also received a $300 stipend for successfully completing the program.

Burrell-Butler says the program was made possible through grants and says she hopes to see it back next summer.
