Some Mount Vernon high school students and their parents say they are worried about the students’ safety when school gets out each day.
Parents who have kids at the Mount Vernon STEAM Academy say a lack of crossing guards and cars excessively speeding are causing safety issues for their kids at the end of the school day.
They say that for about 15 minutes at the end of the school day, it gets very busy around the school. They are calling for traffic control.
Several parents told the Mount Vernon City Council last week that they wanted a crossing guard or possibly a speed bump at the school.
The school district issued a statement, saying they are "actively investigating the safety concerns," and they are going to take "all necessary steps" to ensure student safety.
The City Council president said at last week's council meeting that he emphasizes with parents because he works for the school district and he "knows the plight."
