Mount Vernon residents voiced frustration Monday night over a proposed property tax increase for 2026.

The mayor's draft budget calls for a 6.09% hike, compared to last year's 3.6% increase.

Officials said the money is needed to cover added expenses, including $4 million tied to union contract obligations.

City leaders said the numbers are not final.

The estimate board is scheduled to meet privately this afternoon to discuss a possible spending freeze on non-essential expenses through February.
