Mount Vernon pizzeria returns after fire, owner’s death
A Mount Vernon pizzeria that fell on hard times last summer is back up and serving customers.
A fire damaged Johnny's Pizzeria in June 2019. Nearly a year before that, the owner of the shop, Maria Piscopo, died in a car accident.
The Piscopo family says they are recovering from the loss of the pizzeria matriarch by sticking together and putting their love back into a place they call home.
"After losing my mom, people were unbelievable," says Joe Piscopo, of Johnny's Pizzeria. "It's like starting all over again. I guess this is our time now. It was my mom and my dad and my uncles before that, and now it's my brother and my sisters and I into something new."
Johnny's Pizzeria has been in Mount Vernon for 75 years, and the family says it is not going anywhere. The shop still has three rules: no slices, no credit cards and no Wi-Fi.
