Police say a woman who charged at them with a hatchet is now in the hospital undergoing a full psychiatric evaluation.
Authorities say concerned family members called 911 stating that the 62-year-old woman, whose name is not being released, was acting erratic and violent Friday afternoon. When police arrived on the scene, they say officers were forced to subdue the woman with a department-issued Taser after she would not relinquish her weapon.
"This incident is yet another example of the high level of professionalism and restraint exercised by the Mount Vernon Police Department on a daily basis," says Lt. Michael Zarrill.
The woman was not arrested and no charges are expected to be filed against her.
