Mount Vernon city officials and law enforcement came together to commemorate Police Memorial Day on Tuesday.
The day remembers officers who died in the line of duty and honors the officers who are making a difference in the community today.
The event comes on the heels of Mayor Richard Thomas firing former police commissioner Bob Kelly under questionable circumstances. Last month, the mayor abruptly fired Kelly after less than 90 days on the job.
Kelly was replaced by veteran officer Ronald Fatigate.
"I'm positive we can make this work, I'll be here for as long as the mayor wants me here," says Acting Commissioner Fatigate.
Mayor Thomas says the search for a new commissioner is in full swing, but the question still remains as to why the mayor fired Kelly. The mayor says the matter has been handled effectively and appropriately and that the police department is focused on moving forward.
