Former Police Commissioner Clyde Isley officially kicked off his campaign Tuesday night, making him one of six Democratic candidates vying for the position.
The candidate pool includes incumbent Mayor Richard Thomas, City Council President Andre Wallace, Councilwoman Delia Farquharson, former Planning Commissioner Shawyn Patterson-Howard and former Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis. If elected, Farquharson or Patterson-Howard would be the first woman to lead the city.
The city's Democratic Committee chose Isley over Thomas and Wallace as their nominee in February. Thomas maintains his innocence as he faces state campaign fraud charges.
The Democratic primary is on June 25.
