Mount Vernon is fighting back against the unsafe buildings and the unsanitary conditions responsible for the city's growing rat and trash problems.
Mayor Richard Thomas is unveiling a new quality of life task force to battle the problem.
In addition to working to clean up uncollected garbage and other rat and vermin conditions, the task force will prosecute landlords and business owners who fail to provide safe and sanitary conditions.
The city closed down one rat- and roach-infested building on Tuesday. Mount Vernon is working with the Red Cross and the Department of Social Services to find the residents permanent housing.
