Mount Vernon police are beefing up security after the mayor says someone cut and replaced the lock at Memorial Field to illegally dump garbage.
Mayor Richard Thomas says someone cut the locks at the field overnight on Wednesday and replaced it with their own.
He suspects whomever did it wanted to illegally dump debris on the field.
Thomas says that for years, unscrupulous contractors have used the ballfield to dump toxic and hazardous debris. He says those days are now over.
"Someone must go to jail for this. Bottom line," he says.
Last year, state investigators found that some of the soil at Memorial Field was contaminated from debris that was illegally dumped at the park.
