Sen. Charles Schumer is bringing a Westchester mother of a U.S. soldier who died tragically of an opioid overdose to the State of the Union address.
Stephanie Keegan, of Somers, lost her son just over two years ago.
She hopes her presence at Tuesday's address will help Schumer win more federal funding to fight the crisis.
"Having been through the kind of experience my family went through with my son, I feel very strongly that my presence should communicate the desperate need to focus on care and treatment of addicts and their families, so that the resources are made available to people who are struggling with illness," she says.
She also says her son Daniel, an eight-year military veteran, waited two years to be seen by the VA Hospital while suffering from PTSD and substance abuse.
He died just three weeks before his first appointment.
