More police officers will soon be on Bronx and city streets as the New York Police Department plans its first major expansion in more than a decade. Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced plans to hire 800 more police officers within the next year. The NYPD says the officers will be assigned to high-crime areas, such as impact zones. Bloomberg says more police are needed to keep up with the city's growing population, and Kelly says the new officers will continue to keep crime down. The NYPD also plans to hire 400 civilian officers. Kelly says this will allow police officers who work desk jobs in the Bronx and city to return to the streets. The extra employees will cost the city nearly $34 million during the first year.
