Relatives were relieved to find that a Bronx man missing since Monday was located at Jacobi Medical Center, but officials say he may have been the victim of an assault.
Authorities say EMS workers picked up 62-year-old Gjalosh Vuktilaj several days ago and took him to the hospital.
Vuktilaj is listed in critical condition, and has not been able to speak with detectives.
The missing persons report on Vuktilaj sparked a community-wide search that even involved chopper rooftop sweeps.
Police say he had been taken to the hospital and was being treated as a "John Doe," without notification to the family or to police.
Local Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj says he will be looking into how the incident happened in hopes that law enforcement manpower will not be wasted on needless searches in future similar cases.
