In light of the recent death of beloved comedian Robin Williams, a local pageant winner is sharing her own battle with depression.
April Maroshick was crowned the newest Miss Hudson Valley Saturday night. Maroshick recently shared her struggles with depression on News 12's "Newsmakers."
Although Maroshick hasn't narrowed down what caused her to fall into the frequent depressed states, she says it's important to surround yourself with the right people when you're struggling. "I was putting myself into situations that were comfortable, but not healthy for me. So I was putting myself around people who weren't treating me right, weren't doing good things. But, I was so used to that that it became uncomfortable for me to get away from it and that made my depression even worse than it ever should have been."
Maroshick's advice to overcoming depression is simple. She says to never compare yourself to others and always try to give back because it will make you feel good about yourself.
April will now go on to compete for Miss New York USA.
