After three years of testing, a mental health foster care pilot program has been declared a success for Bronx families.State health officials and foster care groups have been working on a pilot program in the Bronx called Foster Care Mental Health Initiative. They say the program assessed the mental health of foster care children in hopes of early intervention and treatment. It also teaches foster care parents to work through their children?s behavioral problems instead of giving up on them. Representatives say out of the 50 families involved in the three-year program, only two families reported any problems.The Foster Care Mental Health Initiative was such a success for foster care families in the Bronx, organizers say they hope to make it a city-wide initiative in the next four to five months.
