Officials held a special meeting in Port Chester Tuesday after the village board adopted a budget which includes laying off all eight of the fire department's full-time firefighters.
Firefighters from around the county attended the meeting in a show of solidarity.
Mayor Dennis Pilla says it was a cost-cutting measure, and the village's safety is not at risk, but critics disagree on the safety issue.
Pilla also tells News 12 that the laid-off firefighters will be at the top of hiring lists.
