The New York state program for medical marijuana began Thursday.
Eight medical marijuana dispensaries opened up in New York Thursday, including one on East Post Road in White Plains.
When the facility opened in White Plains, Dr. Laura Bultman said she didn't get the crowds she hoped for.
The slow start can be blamed in part on the tight regulations imposed by the state. Unlike other states, New York patients can't smoke the drug. They must ingest the pill, in oil or vapor form.
They also must be diagnosed with one of 10 severe illnesses.
In order to get into the dispensary itself, patients needs to be buzzed in. Once inside, they have to show a state-issued ID, a state medical marijuana card and a prescription from their doctor.
The patients who do make it through the doors meet with the medical team to pick up their drugs.
Doctors must also go through four hours of training just to prescribe medical marijuana.
