Mayor signs bill to lower citywide speed limit
Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill Monday to lower the citywide speed limit.
The mayor signed legislation that lowers the speed limit in New York City from 30 mph to 25 mph unless there is a sign stating otherwise.
The bill is the centerpiece of the mayor's Vision Zero initiative, which is designed to reduce traffic fatalities.
The NYPD will help spread the message of the new speed limit by canvassing neighborhoods in police vans to remind residents.
The Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says the 5 mph difference cuts the chances of a person dying from being hit by a vehicle in half.
The new law goes into effect Nov. 7.
