Mayor Zohran Mamdani agreed to every commitment presented at a Metro IAF accountability assembly in Queens on Suday by pledging continued work on public safety, mental health services and affordable housing.

The assembly, held at Queens College’s Colden Auditorium, revisited promises made a year ago. Sister Joan Gallagher said the organization believes Mamdani is following through.

“They’re holding the mayor accountable and the mayor is delivering,” Gallagher said.

Public safety remained a central focus, with speakers who raised concerns about hate crimes, protecting immigrant New Yorkers after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shooting in the Bronx and the need for children to attend school and religious services without armed guards outside. Mamdani pointed to historically low shooting and murder numbers while also acknowledging that more work remains.

“I want to give you my commitment that so long as there is a single shooting victim, murder, that means the work will never be done,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani also committed to meeting with Metro IAF leaders and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to discuss safety needs. He pledged to open 10 mental health crisis centers across the five boroughs, beginning next year.

On housing, Mamdani promised to address mold and disrepair in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings and build thousands of affordable homes on city-owned land.

One potential site is Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, where the city and Resorts World Casino are competing to secure state support for their respective proposals.

“We need more affordable housing everywhere and we will not get there if we don’t use the city-owned sites to start the journey,” Mamdani said.

While Metro IAF leaders praised Mamdani’s commitments, the next test will be whether those promises translate into tangible results for New Yorkers.
