Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani made a firm promise to families in The Bronx while attending a holiday tree lighting ceremony on Friday.
“We are going to make sure that no longer is The Bronx is the forgotten borough of the city," Mamdani told a crowd of spectators as they cheered.
The democratic socialist joined Bronx Borough President Vanesa Gibson on stage, as dozens packed Lou Gehrig Plaza for the annual tree lighting and toy giveaway.
When asked how he will ensure The Bronx isn't forgotten, Mamdani told News 12 he will be thinking of the city's poorest borough when it's time for budget talks.
“I think a key part of delivering that is actually assuring we are thinking of The Bronx in our policies," he said. "The Bronx often ends up becoming a footnote when it should actually be at the foreground of so much of what we’re talking about.”
The borough president’s office made sure Bronx kids weren’t forgotten Friday night, as Santa took over borough hall and handed out toys one by one.
“The most rewarding part of today is serving the community," said Bill Tipacti, director of community affairs.
Tipacti says over the last four years, Univision and the borough president's office handed out 10,000 toys, bringing smiles and holiday cheer to Bronx families during the holiday season.
