A person is in custody following an attempted robbery and subsequent gunfire in Mount Vernon.

Esua Joseph said he was inside his home on Pearl Street when he heard the gunfire.

"My family just woke up to gunshots around like 6 a.m. It sounded like a firework. Then we pretty much woke up, we were pretty scared. I waited until like 11 a.m. and went downstairs to see the aftermath. That's when we discovered a bullet went through the window," said Joseph.

Before the gunfire, there was an attempted robbery just a couple of blocks away.

It happened shortly after 5:30 a.m. at a gas station on Mount Vernon Avenue.

"NYPD already had a unit that was doing some investigations in the area and so they responded. The suspects, who fled on foot, fired shots at NYPD," says Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.

Officials with NYPD say one officer fired back.

No one was seriously hurt, according to authorities.

The incident sparked a massive investigation as police searched for the suspects.

One person of interest was taken into custody Friday evening, according to NYPD.

There's no word right now on the ages, names or possible charges the suspects are facing.

Mount Vernon police encourage anyone with information about the incident to call 914-665-2510.
