97ds agoManhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is taking on a New York City slumlord.
He announced an indictment Wednesday against a landlord who he says harassed rent regulated tenants with “horrific” living conditions to drive them out.
Daniel Ohebshalom is accused of creating unlivable conditions for his tenants including no heat or hot water in the winter, front doors without locks and a lack of security measures in his five Manhattan buildings.
Bragg says one leak that went unrepaired caused a ceiling to fall on a young child.
Ohebshalom is facing multiple charges of harassment of a rent regulated tenant in the first degree, among other charges.
“The multiple layers of LLC’s combined with individuals who signed documents, but in fact had no connections to the buildings made it virtually impossible for tenants to know who to go to for help. Many of them band together to clean their own properties and address their safety concerns themselves, demonstrating the heart and determination of true New Yorkers, but they should not have had to,” Bragg said at a press conference.
If convicted, Ohebshalom faces up to four years behind bars.
